It’s an amazing feeling when inspiration strikes - it seems like we can hardly type fast enough to get all that brilliance from our brains to the page. But to make it as a writer, you have to teach yourself to write when you aren’t inspired as well.
Whether you’re focused on stand up, sketch, storytelling, or general comedic writing, you will walk away with practical ways to get your brain moving when it feels like it’s stuck in park.
There will also be opportunities to workshop your ideas and get feedback from the instructor and other participants.

Welcome to improv! Here’s where to start.
This class is designed for absolute beginners up to those with some short form or long form improv experience. Each week we will develop your group and individual skills through scene work and exercises.
This course is an introduction to long-form improvisation, based on the style developed by The iO Theater and The Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre. We will start with a focus on the fundamentals - agreement, listening, and support - as well as the thing that should come across in every scene: the FUN! We will also get into technical improv skills like establishing the reality of the scene, connecting with your scene partner, and playing with emotion.
Class ends in an optional graduation show.

Whether you’re a seasoned performer or brand-new to storytelling, this workshop with Deena Nyer Mendlowitz (This Improvised Life, Mental Illness & Friends) offers a safe, inspiring space to explore your voice and connect to the art of true stories told live.
This is part of our Comedy Basics series. Learn comedy skills from veteran instructors in Storytelling Basics and Standup Basics!
Description:
All of us have so many stories inside ourselves — ones that will make people lean in, laugh, or quietly nod because they see themselves in our words. In this four-week class, you’ll learn how to turn real moments from your life into powerful, authentic stories for the stage — just like you hear on The Moth or see at local storytelling shows.
Through weekly guided exercises, feedback, and supportive coaching, you’ll discover:
• How to find the story beneath the story — the emotional truth that connects you and your audience.
• Techniques for structure and pacing that make your story come alive.
• How to use your natural voice, presence, and vulnerability to both feel comfortable and connect with the audience.
• Ways to polish your story for performance or just for personal reflection.
For our fourth and final class, you’ll share one fully developed 5-7 minute story at our class showcase.

She is also the co-founder of Mass Hysteria Improv Comedy Fest, a comedy fest run by women, for everyone. Deena was recently named one of Ohio's funniest women by Cleveland.com and was also honored as a CJN Difference Maker for the work she has done using comedy to promote mental health awareness and to destigmatize mental illness.
This next-level class will explore ways to identify worthy story topics; convey meaningful themes; use improvisation, humor, and emotional expression to create relatability; and improve speech, gestures, and proxemics when performing on stage. For emerging and evolving storytellers.

Three hours on the hardest ten seconds of any scene: the top. We'll work three different ways in — leading with a bold emotional point of view and no context at all, walking in mid-moment like something big already happened, and entering loaded with one specific, unusual detail. Lots of open scene reps with coaching so players can find which door fits them. The whole thing is built around making a strong first choice, being emotionally clear, and trusting your partner to catch whatever you throw.

Improv is built on agreement and radical support. But often, in our effort to work together, we create work that lacks mischief and unpredictability. We end up feeling trapped by our own rules -- unable to break free and explore new possibilities. Clown principles can add that sense of risk and play. Learn how to subvert the expectations, blur the lines of fact and fiction, create greater stakes and bring the audience more into your play.
Designed for improvisers of all levels.

Chad Damiani is on a mission.
Save comedy from cleverness. Or burn it all down.
Watch as he directs Cleveland performers through a perilous modern clown show – one that forces them to dig deep, give more and find solutions to impossible problems. Can these players fully commit to nonsense and give the audience the show of their lives? Or will they crumble under the ruthless pressure of the one-and-only Clown Boss?
A glorious celebration of failure and the cruelest show in clown.
