Whether you’re a seasoned performer or brand-new to storytelling, this workshop with Deena Nyer Mendlowitz (This Improvised Life, Mental Illness & Friends) offers a safe, inspiring space to explore your voice and connect to the art of true stories told live.

Description:
All of us have so many stories inside ourselves — ones that will make people lean in, laugh, or quietly nod because they see themselves in our words. In this four-week class, you’ll learn how to turn real moments from your life into powerful, authentic stories for the stage — just like you hear on The Moth or see at local storytelling shows.
Through weekly guided exercises, feedback, and supportive coaching, you’ll discover:
• How to find the story beneath the story — the emotional truth that connects you and your audience.
• Techniques for structure and pacing that make your story come alive.
• How to use your natural voice, presence, and vulnerability to both feel comfortable and connect with the audience.
• Ways to polish your story for performance or just for personal reflection.
For our fourth and final class, you’ll share one fully developed 5-7 minute story at our class showcase.

Showcase Sunday 10/18 6pm

Please Note: The classes will be hosted at the Imposters Theater Outlet, located at 5022 Lorain Ave Cleveland OH 44102. While Imposters Theater strives for inclusivity, the Outlet has a slight step to enter the space and the restroom is up a half flight of stairs that may be difficult for some participants. We also do not currently have a water dispenser onsite, so please bring your own water. Emergency water can be provided as needed. Parking: Enter the main entrance to Urban Community School on W. 47th Street, south of Lorain Ave. Follow the driveway to the main oval parking lot in front of the red tower. You can park in any space marked with a green square. You can then follow the sidewalk to Lorain Ave. and cross the street to Imposters Theater (4828 Lorain) or continue a block West to The Imposters Outlet Mall (5022 Lorain).
Street parking is also available on Lorain Ave (paid) and side streets (free).
About the Instructor:
Deena Nyer Mendlowitz has been performing and teaching improv for over 15 years. She trained at The Second City Cleveland and at both The Second City and Annoyance Theater in Chicago. Deena is the creator of This Improvised Life, a part improvised, part written story-telling hour, and Mental Illness and Friends!, a live comedy talk show. She is also the co-founder of Mass Hysteria Improv Comedy Fest, a comedy fest run by women, for everyone. Deena was recently named one of Ohio's funniest women by Cleveland.com and was also honored as a CJN Difference Maker for the work she has done using comedy to promote mental health awareness and to destigmatize mental illness.
