More about THE ACTING CLASS
Professional actor (Étoile, Mean Girls 2024, Ghosts, Bob's Burgers) and award-winning podcaster (Dead Eyes) CONNOR RATLIFF is a classically trained performer who graduated "with honours" from the prestigious Liverpool Institute For Performing Arts over a quarter of a century ago, making his professional debut on the stage of the Royal Court Theatre in London’s West End. During that same year, he also performed at Buckingham Palace for Queen Elizabeth II. In the decades that followed, he has accumulated numerous credits as a star of stage, screen and stream, appearing in multiple Netflix Original Films as well as content on CBS, NBC, FOX, TBS, Home Box Office, Amazon Prime, and the now-defunct comedy platforms, Go90 and Seeso.
But none of that matters now.
What matters now is CONNOR RATLIFF presents THE ACTING CLASS, an unending series of workshop performances where he will, before your very eyes, demonstrate what acting truly IS.
For this special IMPOSTERS THEATER edition, Connor welcomes a longtime friend and collaborator to THE ACTING CLASS – professional actor/writer/comedian/producer JAMES III (Astronomy Club, Black Mirror, Big Mouth, Good Burger 2, Abbott Elementary) – for an in-depth discussion of their shared craft and a full-bodied demonstration of James’ unexplored potential that could, perhaps, push him to his breaking point.
This performance will be slightly interactive and completely improvised, lasting approximately 90 minutes.
Defiantly self-indulgent and beyond pointless, THE ACTING CLASS is your opportunity to witness the kind of greatness – only slightly appreciated by The Industry – that has kept Connor Ratliff steadily employed for nearly half of the past 10 years.

Characters and impressions are the backbone of comedy - whether you’re working in improv, sketch, standup, or social media.
This workshop combines improvisation and comedy writing techniques to develop funny, three-dimensional, true to life solo impressions and original characters.

This Improvised Life
This Improvised Life combines some of Cleveland's best storytellers with some of Cleveland's best improvisers to give you a blend of comedy, spontaneity, and heart you won't find anywhere else in town.
Each month, two storytellers share a true story from their lives based on a prompt, the performers hear it for the first time along with the audience and perform scenes based on each story.

Listen to fascinating Ted Talks as you’ve never heard them before - and neither have the performers. Four improvisers will present PowerPoints that they have never seen before in the style of various funny characters and unhinged experts.
Audience members will then have the opportunity to ask these characters about their presentation and even their character lives after each presentation.
CLEVELAND’S COMEDY COURT
We take the audience's problems and put them on trial.
A group of improvisers get someone's problem, and then put that problem on trial with fake attorneys and witnesses for both sides. Guided by a real fake judge to keep things somewhat on the rails.

An Improvised Fairytale (Family Friendly!)
Get your Sunday sillies on at our family-friendly show! At our interactive “An Improvised Fairytale,” the KIDS get to make choices that dictate the action as performers act out a traditional fairytale. After the show, kids and their favorite grownups are invited to play improv games with the cast.

This continuation of Standup Basics zooms in on the joke writing process. Learn more about joke structure, writing discipline, and the world of standup comedy, while getting continued feedback on your jokes and performance from Bill.

Rough Draft: Sketch Open Mic
An hour dedicated to testing written comedic material. Whether you’re part of an existing sketch group or dipping your toes in the sketch water this is the place for you to try out new work.
How it works: You can submit as a group or as an individual writer for a 10 minute slot. If you’re a writer, we will find actors for you to read your scripts. Sketches can be presented as stage readings or fully blocked and costumed pieces. Booked acts will receive the run order the week of the show.
How to submit: Fill out this form with your group/individual name, the date you are interested in, and your scripts. All material will be accepted but I am screening for basic crimes against humanity, don’t be a jerk.

Fundamentals of Acting
This workshop will touch on all the basic essentials an actor needs-- body, voice and presence. We will offer exercises that strengthen the beginning actors' physicality/movement, vocal projection, and stage presence.

This is a welcoming, fun workshop for absolute beginners run by one of our veteran performer/instructors. No experience necessary.
Workshop devoted to sparking the aspiring or curious actor’s playfulness and courage to create. Participants will engage in theater games, drama therapy exercises, and acting lessons designed to explore spontaneity, imagination, connection (with themselves and others) and learn to follow their own artistic impulses.

Listen to fascinating Ted Talks as you’ve never heard them before - and neither have the performers. Four improvisers will present PowerPoints that they have never seen before in the style of various funny characters and unhinged experts.
Audience members will then have the opportunity to ask these characters about their presentation and even their character lives after each presentation.
CLEVELAND’S COMEDY COURT
We take the audience's problems and put them on trial.
A group of improvisers get someone's problem, and then put that problem on trial with fake attorneys and witnesses for both sides. Guided by a real fake judge to keep things somewhat on the rails.

An Improvised Fairytale (Family Friendly!)
Get your Sunday sillies on at our family-friendly show! At our interactive “An Improvised Fairytale,” the KIDS get to make choices that dictate the action as performers act out a traditional fairytale. After the show, kids and their favorite grownups are invited to play improv games with the cast.

Description:
All of us have so many stories inside ourselves — ones that will make people lean in, laugh, or quietly nod because they see themselves in our words. In this four-week class, you’ll learn how to turn real moments from your life into powerful, authentic stories for the stage — just like you hear on The Moth or see at local storytelling shows.
Through weekly guided exercises, feedback, and supportive coaching, you’ll discover:
• How to find the story beneath the story — the emotional truth that connects you and your audience.
• Techniques for structure and pacing that make your story come alive.
• How to use your natural voice, presence, and vulnerability to both feel comfortable and connect with the audience.
• Ways to polish your story for performance or just for personal reflection.
For our fourth and final class, you’ll share one fully developed 5-7 minute story at our class showcase.

About the Instructor:
Deena Nyer Mendlowitz has been performing and teaching improv for over 15 years. She trained at The Second City Cleveland and at both The Second City and Annoyance Theater in Chicago. Deena is the creator of This Improvised Life, a part improvised, part written story-telling hour, and Mental Illness and Friends!, a live comedy talk show. She is also the co-founder of Mass Hysteria Improv Comedy Fest, a comedy fest run by women, for everyone. Deena was recently named one of Ohio's funniest women by Cleveland.com and was also honored as a CJN Difference Maker for the work she has done using comedy to promote mental health awareness and to destigmatize mental illness.

Standup Basics: Comedy Writing Workshop with Bill Squire
Comedian Bill Squire has been in comedy for over 20 years. He's performed nationwide in comedy clubs, colleges, theaters, and arenas.
In this 4 week course, Bill will teach the basics of writing and performing Stand-up Comedy to help newer comedians get a jump start on what it takes to write, perform, and get booked to perform stand-up comedy.
This workshop is ideal for absolute beginners and those newer to stand up - Bill will cover topics such as etiquette and joke structure, there will be guided writing exercises, and the workshop ends in a showcase hosted by Bill, where everyone will perform a 3-5 minute set.

Sketch Battle
Three sketch comedy troupes are given three prompts to inspire three sketches. They’ll have two months to write and prepare to compete in the blood-stained arena of comedy combat.
You, the audience, will decide which group lives and which group… also lives but does not move on to the tournament of champions.
The winning troupe will receive bragging rights and the opportunity to defend their hard won title of Sketch Battle champion.

Rough Draft: Sketch Open Mic
An hour dedicated to testing written comedic material. Whether you’re part of an existing sketch group or dipping your toes in the sketch water this is the place for you to try out new work.
How it works: You can submit as a group or as an individual writer for a 10 minute slot. If you’re a writer, we will find actors for you to read your scripts. Sketches can be presented as stage readings or fully blocked and costumed pieces. Booked acts will receive the run order the week of the show.
How to submit: Fill out this form with your group/individual name, the date you are interested in, and your scripts. All material will be accepted but I am screening for basic crimes against humanity, don’t be a jerk.

Mental Illness & Friends: Live Comedy Talk Show
Mental Illness and Friends, created and hosted by Deena Nyer Mendlowitz, is a live comedy talk-show combining stand-up, improv, and open, honest dialogue with other artists dealing with mental health issues.
Nyer Mendlowitz, who lives with anxiety and suicidal ideation, begins each performance with a new opening monologue, seamlessly weaving mental illness, real life, and laughter together.
Each month she invites other comedians, improv artists, actors, and often a musical guest to perform and share a bit of their own mental health history.
The hour-long show closes with an improv set based on topics discussed that evening. The results are hilarious, honest, enlightening, empowering, inspiring and leave both the performers and audience feeling a little more connected and understood.

Deena Nyer Mendlowitz is a comedian, an improviser, and a teacher. Her work has been featured on NPR, in USA Today & New Scientist Magazine. Deena is the co-founder of Mass Hysteria Improv Fest and creator of This Improvised Life, a part improvised, part written story-telling hour.

We take the audience's problems and put them on trial.

Workshop devoted to sparking the aspiring or curious actor’s playfulness and courage to create. ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR:
Michael Busch
Originally from Mentor, Ohio, Michael brings over 15 years of experience in the Los Angeles entertainment industry and live comedy scene back to Cleveland to help support and build the vibrant local community. He is a graduate of the IO improv program and has studied at UCB with founders Matt Walsh and Matt Besser, among others. He was on house improv teams at both IO West and UCB, and a sketch house team at UCB. He has written and produced sketches and web series for places such as FunnyorDie, CollegeHumor, AwesomenessTV, and Defy Media. His acting credits include Conan, The Goldbergs, Pretty Little Liars, and Human Giant.
Michael is the founder and Artistic Director of Imposters Theater.

Jester's Privilege - A Silly Drag King Show
Join drag kings Abel N. Willing, Barnaby Wilde, Ronnie Wrath, Bram Stroke-her and Zion Grindr for a night of laughter in the romance capital of the world: Cleveland, Ohio. Will love be in the air? Hard to say! Will tom foolery be in the air? Most definitely!
Abel N. Willing is a Northeast Ohio drag king. He uses his background in sketch comedy to propel his unique and campy performances. In December 2023, he became the first drag king to win Kingpin, one of the nation’s first multi-week drag king competitions. From giving birth to a puppet to impersonating historical figures or even busting out the occasional dance move, Abel always keeps his audience entertained and laughing with his unpredictable, high-energy acts.

This class is a continuation of Imposters Improv Level 2. If you have not taken our Level 2 class, but have similar experience elsewhere, please email us at info at imposterstheater .com before signing up.
Level 3 is all about enhancing your performance skills while improvising. Students will learn a combination of acting techniques that will get them out of their heads and into their bodies to create character driven improv scenes.
Class ends in a graduation show

No refunds UNLESS we do not reach the 8 person minimum, in which case you will get a full refund or credit toward a future class. If you have to drop the class and it’s before the 5th meeting, we will issue a half credit for a future class good for 6 months.
